Rodgersia podophylla, commonly known as Rodger’s Flower or Featherleaf Rodgersia, is a striking perennial native to Japan and Korea. This bold, architectural plant is prized for its large, palmate leaves that can reach up to 60 cm across, resembling horse chestnut foliage. The leaves emerge with a bronze tint in spring, maturing to a deep green and often developing reddish hues in autumn.

In early to midsummer, Rodgersia podophylla produces tall plumes of tiny, star-shaped flowers in creamy white to soft pink, rising above the foliage on stems that can reach 1.5 metres in height. These airy inflorescences create a dramatic contrast to the substantial leaves, adding a sense of lightness to the plant’s robust form.

Thriving in partial shade and moist, humus-rich soil, this Rodgersia is ideal for woodland gardens, bog gardens, or the edges of water features. Its impressive size and texture make it an excellent focal point or background plant, bringing a touch of exotic grandeur to shaded areas of the garden.
