Acanthus, often known as bear’s breeches, is a striking genus of perennial plants celebrated for their bold architectural presence and historical significance. Native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia, Acanthus species are instantly recognisable by their large, deeply lobed leaves, which inspired the classical Corinthian column designs of ancient Greece and Rome. The foliage forms impressive clumps that can reach up to a metre across, creating dramatic ground-level structure in borders and gardens.

In summer, Acanthus produces tall, upright flower spikes, often rising 1–2m high, covered with hooded white, pink, or purple flowers nestled within spiny, bracted calyces. These stately blooms provide vertical interest and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. The flowers, combined with the bold foliage, give Acanthus a distinctive, almost sculptural quality that works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary planting schemes.

Acanthus thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Once established, it is remarkably resilient, tolerating dry conditions and requiring little maintenance. While spreading in nature, it can be managed with regular care. Timeless, dramatic, and resilient, Acanthus remains a favourite among gardeners for creating bold statements, adding historical resonance, and enhancing garden design with architectural elegance.
