Calycanthus 'Venus'
Calycanthus 'Venus' is a stunning deciduous shrub, prized for its large, magnolia-like flowers and attractive foliage. This hybrid cultivar, a cross between C. floridus and C. chinensis, combines the best traits of both parents. 'Venus' typically grows to a height and spread of 1.5-2 metres, forming a rounded, multi-stemmed shrub with an elegant, upright habit.
The plant's most striking feature is its fragrant, creamy-white flowers, which can reach up to 10 cm in diameter. These blooms, appearing from late spring through summer, feature numerous tepals surrounding a yellow centre, creating a water lily-like effect. The glossy, dark green leaves are oval-shaped and add to the plant's ornamental value, turning a soft yellow in autumn.
Calycanthus 'Venus' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-draining soil. It's an excellent choice for mixed borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. This low-maintenance shrub offers multi-season interest, combining beautiful flowers, attractive foliage, and a pleasing, compact form.
