Boehmeria platanifolia
Boehmeria platanifolia commonly known as the Plane-leaved False Nettle, is a striking ornamental plant that brings a touch of tropical elegance to gardens and landscapes. Native to East Asia, particularly Japan and Taiwan, this perennial belongs to the nettle family (Urticaceae) but lacks the stinging hairs associated with true nettles.
The plant's most distinctive feature is its large, heart-shaped leaves that bear a resemblance to those of a plane tree, hence its specific epithet "platanifolia." These impressive leaves can grow up to 12 inches long and nearly as wide, with deeply serrated edges and a slightly rough texture. The foliage emerges in a beautiful soft glaucous green colour, maturing to a deeper, more muted green as the season progresses.
Boehmeria platanifolia typically grows in an upright, bushy form, reaching heights of 90-120cm (3 to 5') with a similar spread. In late summer to early autumn it produces small, inconspicuous greenish flowers in long, drooping catkins that add a subtle but interesting textural element to the plant.
This species thrives in partial shade to full shade making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens or shaded borders. It prefers rich, moist soil but is adaptable to various garden situations once established. Dies back in winter but will reliably resprout in spring.
With its bold foliage and architectural form, Boehmeria platanifolia serves as an eye-catching focal point in shade gardens, providing a lush, tropical feel. Its ease of care and striking appearance make it a valuable addition to any garden seeking to create a sense of exotic beauty.
