Begonia masoniana 'Rock'
Begonia masoniana 'Rock', commonly known as the Iron Cross Begonia, is a striking foliage plant prized for its uniquely patterned leaves. This rhizomatous begonia features large, asymmetrical leaves that can grow up to 20 cm in length. The foliage is a deep olive-green colour with a distinctive dark brown to black cross-shaped marking in the centre, resembling an iron cross, which gives the plant its common name.
The leaves of 'Rock' have a slightly quilted texture and are covered in fine red hairs, adding to their visual appeal. This cultivar is compact, typically growing to a height of 30-45 cm, making it ideal for indoor cultivation or as a striking addition to shaded garden areas. While primarily grown for its foliage, B. masoniana 'Rock' may produce small pink or white flowers in spring, though these are often considered insignificant compared to the dramatic leaves.
Thriving in high humidity and partial to full shade, this begonia prefers well-draining, rich soil. It's an excellent choice for terrariums, bathroom environments, or as a standout specimen in a collection of foliage plants.
