Hosta for sale and cultivation tips

Of all the plants that are grown for their leaves, Hostas must be amongst the most spectacular. Their leaves come in such a range that it would be impossible to have them all (even if we are trying!!). Pale lemons, bold blues, delicately edged greens and subtle combinations of all the leaf colours - the list goes on. We currently have about 200 varieties, most of which are for sale all through the year. Our miniature collection is growing day by day. These small Hosta are excellent for growing in ornate pots. From large plants reaching heights of 1m or more, to small, miniatures no more than a couple of centimetres tall. Add to this the colour range…every shade of gold, green and blue in all sorts of combinations variegations and shapes. These sturdy herbaceous plants are amazing. There really are so many that it may seem slightly bewildering to begin with. Why not start with one of our special collections. Several are available, all excellent value for money. What makes them so much more special is that they are totally tolerant of shade. They then go on to produce tall spires of attractive lilac, white or purple bell-like

Alpines and rockery plants for the garden

Alpines and Rockery plants You might ask yourself what is the difference?  You may even wonder when a plant moves from an alpine to a shrub or herbaceous perennial – well we have the same problem. Again I’m sure that there is a system that the purists use and a well laid down RHS principle. Here at the nursery we group alpines and rockery plants together and as a general rule of thumb if it is small and not particularly rampant it fits into this group. We offer a large range of alpine plants all grown on the nursery. These range from the popular and reliable to the more unusual and slightly more difficult. How to grow them  Alpines Technically, these are plants that grow in an alpine climate, which ‘occurs at high elevation and above the tree line’. Most alpines are very hardy, so can cope with cold winters. However they don’t like standing in wet soil - so the main thing to consider when growing them is drainage.  They must be planted in a compost or soil that is supplemented with the addition of sharp sand or grit. If you are very lucky you may have an area that is

Worth Growing

Farmyard Nurseries prides itself on the range of unusual herbaceous plants on offer. We don't grow obscure varieties, which may be difficult to cultivate or produce indifferent flowers. Rather we offer a wide selection of garden worthy plants, unusual - yes, novel - yes, but worth growing. Plants to make your garden a little different, plants you wouldn't find in the normal garden centre. We don't for example offer one variety of Ligularia but ten!! They don't need special care and are usually easy enough to cultivate. The herbaceous plants we aim to produce are large and well established, plants that will give a good show almost in their first year, and above all reasonably priced. Listed below are a small selection of our unusual herbaceous plants, there are many hundreds more. A good cut flower. Anemone rivularis A beautiful and delicate anemone, pure white with a definite blue outer edge to the throat. Requires a well-drained humus rich soil in sun or partial shade. The Woodland Garden

The Woodland Garden In addition to the nursery visitors have the opportunity to wander through the woodland nursery garden. An interesting one-acre site with woodland walks, a natural water feature, sunken walled area, and several other topical places available for our customers to browse. Here you can see a large selection of plants, for which the adjoining nursery is especially well known. The Woodland Garden is full of bulbs, perennials and shrubs planted underneath a canopy of trees, creating an atmosphere of peace. It is a very tranquil garden with magnificent views. Past improvements to the garden resulted in shaded areas and the several woodland walks, lined with Hostas, ferns etc., under planted with drifts of spring bulbs. The woodland garden is open whenever the Nursery is open. Donations to one of several charities are invited. A wildlife pond greets you as you enter the garden. This lovely feature is fed with recirculated run off water from the nursery and is a haven for myriads of frogs toads and newts. In February the spawning frogs make so much noise they are often mistaken for a chainsaw! In 2015 we extensively thinned the shrubs. The
