Plant Profile | Saxifraga fortunei

Saxifraga fortunei and its related varieties are a massive group of plants that are not widely known or grown. Everything about them is interesting. Their foliage, their flowers, their favoured location and the time of year that they bloom. All of these attributes add up to give us a plant that should be grown in all gardens. Several years ago I was introduced to these by a group of Japanese plantsmen who came over to the nursery to look at our Hellebores. As is customary they brought with them gifts... in this case some beautiful varieties of Saxifraga fortunei. So that was it - the obsession had started! Over the years we have been slowly building up our collection and hopefully we will have enough to sell in 2017. So here goes... this is why I love them so much. That shady area. Every garden seems to have a corner that is dull or badly lit, be it by overhanging shrubs and trees or by buildings and these spots can be quite a challenge. So what can we do? Well these areas should be cherished and not despised. Gems such as Hellebores, Epimediums, hardy Cyclamen and Wood Anemones,

Our market stall in Carmarthen

Our Market Stall in Carmarthen As well as our shop we also have a lovely market stall every Wednesday, Friday  and Saturday (unless the weather is awful) in Carmarthen. It is situated between Boots and Marks & Spencers and is run by Hazel and sometimes Dave. We have had this for 30 years (half a lifetime) and have lots of lovely customers who come back week after week to keep us informed of the goings on and gossip and to buy the odd plant as well. The aim of the market is to be a show piece for the business - so it is always stocked with plants that are looking good, usually in flower to tempt you as you pass. All the plants that we sell in the Nursery can be brought in to be picked up from here. We are open from silly o'clock in the  morning until 5 or 6 at night depending on how cold Hazel is! It is just 200 yards from our shop literally just around the corner!
