Description

Euphorbia milii

Euphorbia milii, commonly known as Crown of Thorns, is a remarkable succulent shrub originating from Madagascar. This striking plant typically reaches heights of 45-60 cm when grown as a houseplant, though in its native habitat it can grow considerably taller. Its distinctive stems are thick, grey-green, and adorned with sharp thorns, lending the plant its evocative common name.

The true flowers are actually quite small, but they are surrounded by showy bracts in shades of red, pink, or occasionally yellow, which appear throughout the year. These bracts provide long-lasting colour, making it an excellent choice for indoor displays. Like all euphorbias, the plant produces a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes, so careful handling is essential.

Best suited to bright, warm positions indoors, Euphorbia milii thrives in well-draining compost and tolerates occasional drought. Its architectural form and year-round flowering ability make it a fascinating addition to conservatories, sunny windowsills, or frost-free indoor spaces.
