Tricyrtis cultivation

General needs.

These amazing plants really are 'jewels of the orient'. Their stunningly intricate flowers often put orchids to shame, being just as beautiful but far easier to grow.

Originating in the Far East, they naturally inhabit semi shaded woodland settings, often growing in the most inaccessible places, whether peering out gracefully from huge stands of bamboos or hanging delicately from rock faces their beauty shines out.

Being shade lovers in the wild, it is best to try to mimic their likes in the garden. A semi shaded woodland setting is ideal, with a deep rich moisture retentive yet free draining soil.

They are roughly divided into 4 groups, tall ,medium, dwarf and pendulous, making them ideal plants for almost all areas. The tall species, cultivars and varieties tend to get a little out of hand if left unattended, these do best with a light trim in June. This encourages flowering and keeps them a little more compact.

To make things easier we have decided to divide the genus into its individual species as follows

formosana                                     latifolia                                       ohsumiensis
hirta maculata perfoliata
lasiocarpa macrapoda
ishiiana macrantha
